COLUMBIA, S.C. — A 30-year-old Richland County woman is now facing charges of insurance fraud after an investigation by South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED).
According to arrest warrants provided by SLED, Jasmine Shada Grate has been charged with Forgery – Value $10,000 or More and Presenting a False Claim for Insurance Payment, Value $10,000 or More for her alleged actions on or around September 30, 2021. On or around that date, Grate allegedly falsified an Employment Verification letter for a man, identified as Granison Dwight Peterson, 31, to be submitted to Geico Insurance in an attempt to gain lost wages greater than $10,000.
The letter Grate allegedly wrote advised that Peterson worked as an independent contractor for MellyGirl Logistics with a salary of $1,500 per week and he had been out of work from May 18, 2021 to August 3, 2021.
Geico denied that part of the claim because of fraudulent and conflicting information submitted by Grate and Peterson. Database searched yielded no information for MellyGirl Logistics, and a recorded statement from a manager a Value City Furniture disputed their claim that Peterson worked delivery jobs for them through MellyGirl Logistics.
Grate was arrested on Wednesday, May 27, and booked into Alvin S Glenn Detention Center in Richland County.
SLED previously charged Granison Dwight Peterson Jr., 31, with Forgery – Value $10,000 or More and Presenting a False Claim for Insurance Payment – Value $10,000 or More on Thursday, May 7, 2026, in connection with this investigation. According to the Public Index, Peterson was booked into the Lexington County Detention Center and has since made bond.
